MG ZS 180. Built during the twilight years of MG/Rover and tracing its lineage back to an early-90's Honda, it had a 2.5l V6, a wing from a WRX, some admittedly nice looking wheels, and generally favorable reviews at the time.

Don’t worry, I like this too. I think it’s the spoiler and side gills. It’s like MG tried making a Impreza WRX. Although this does look a tad crap and old person mobile , they are actually pretty nice to drive.

So this is kind of an e-46 with a Honda V6 and the front end from a.....GTO that someone left out in the sun? If manual trans sign me the hell up

MG Rover put a lot of effort into rebuilding the MG brand, since that was the trademark they owned outright, whereas Rover was only licensed from BMW (and restricted to use only on 2wd vehicles), they decided early on that MG was the future of the company. IIRC, the ZS actually had a lot of changes from the Rover 45 underneath to give it firmer suspension and tighter/more responsive handling. It also managed to still look fairly modern at the end in 2005, despite being a decade old design by then. Nanjing Automobile tried to restart production when they bought the remains of the company, but too much of the intellectual property belonged to Honda, and they wouldn't agree to a new license.

BMW got a better price when they sold Land Rover to Ford, by agreeing that they would block anyone from using the Rover name on anything AWD/4WD. Which is why ownership of the brand had to be retained by BMW, so they had control over its use. It was licensed to MG Rover, free of charge, in perpetuity, with the license agreement to expire in the event of bankruptcy. BMW were also forbidden to sell or transfer the brand as long as the license was in place, but Ford had right of first refusal if it was ever sold.

These were surprisingly good to drive, or so I’ve heard. I think if I was picking from the later era MGR lineup, though, I’d have to go with this:
